St Cecilia’s Church

St Cecilia’s Church

The first Port Hedland Catholic Church was constructed in the 1930s and was described as ’small and hot’.

In 1963, land on Sutherland Street was acquired by the parish priest, Father Harold Middleton, and he set about constructing the current church in 1964 on Sutherland Street. Construction workers and townspeople assisted with the building of the church by making cement block bricks. Working day and night, over 86,000 bricks were made using three compacting machines.

While of no architectural value, the parish of St Cecilia’s in Port Hedland has been at the heart of the development and growth of the Pilbara region of the Diocese of Geraldton.
