Blessed Virgin Mary Queen of Peace, Scone

Fr Hanly accompanied Archbishop Polding to Kingdon Street where they proceeded to lay the foundation stone for St Mary’s Church on 17 February 1860. The church opened on 15 September 1861 by Fr John Dunn of Singleton.
The foundation stone for St Mary’s new church – Our Lady Queen of Peace was laid and blessed on 14 December 1924 by the Right Reverend Dr Dwyer, Bishop of Maitland. The Blessed Virgin Mary Queen of Peace Church replaced the smaller church of St Mary’s due to a growing Catholic population and the expanding eastern side of the town. Designed by Mr. J C Gannon of Newcastle, it was opened on 20 October 1925 by Bishop O’Connor of Armidale. Erected in 1938 at the entrance to the church are First World War memorial gates dedicated to the fallen soldiers of Scone and district.
