Divine Mercy Shrine

Divine Mercy Shrine

The idea of buying a plot of land in Keysborough on Greens Road was born from the initiative of Father Maksymilian Szura SChr in May 1998.

The purchased land was very quickly tidied up and developed, and the metal shed was converted into a temporary chapel. In a letter dated 17 June 1998, Archbishop George Pell gave permission to open the Polish Catholic Centre and to celebrate Holy Mass in the temporary chapel.

On December 6, 1998, Archbishop Stefan Wesoły consecrated the chapel and the grounds.

Efforts were made to obtain permission to build a church at the Dandenong City Council, where plans by Canberra architect Jacek Łukaszyk were presented. After many adventures and prohibitions, to the joy of the ministering priests and the faithful, construction began two years later.

On November 23, 2003, Bishop Christopher Prowse blessed the foundations for the future sanctuary. The following year, also on the feast of Christ the King, on November 21, 2004, he blessed the Cornerstone brought from the grave of St. Faustina.

On April 22, 2006, on the eve of the Feast of Divine Mercy, the long-awaited moment came, the Consecration of the Shrine of Divine Mercy. The liturgy was led by Archbishop Denis Hart, assisted by the shepherd of the Polish community, Bishop Ryszard Karpiński, who came from Poland, and Bishop Hilton Deakin, the local guardian of emigrants and refugees.
